Bowie Blazes a Wired Trail David Bowie's e-world tour: *1983- During his Serious Moonlight tour, Bowie's camp conducts all global communication via a little-known process called electronic mail, known today as e-mail. "It was quite barberic then," Bowie says. "It took hours, but it was always available, more efficient that telephones, and we could actually keep in touch with headquarters in New York from anywhere in the world." *1988- Bowie unveils the first srtist newsgroup on the internet. *1993- Jump, one of rock's first CD-ROMs, is released in conjunction with the album Black Tie White Noise, *1997- Bowie becomes the first artist to release and Internet-only single, Telling Lies. *1998-BowieNet, the first artist created ISP, is launched. PC Magazine dubs it "The cool- est ISP on the planet," and Wired declares it one of the best entertainment sites of the year. "I wanted an extremely innovative alternative to the more coporate Yahoos," he says. Bowie's online songwriting contest draws 80,000 entries. *1999- Contest winner Alex Grant and Bowie record their e-collaboration, What's Really Happening? The live cybercast is the first to use the industry's 360-degree camera. The David Bowie Radio Network, the 13th channel on the Rolling Stone Radio web site, beging broadcasting 24 hours a day. Bowie compiled the 54-track playlist. Ultrastar, the Internet service firm Bowie co-founded, creates the official website and online fan club (with e-mail and internet access) for the New York Yankees. "We are still the company of any note to provide these smaller ISPs," Bowie says. On September 21, two weeks before its street release, Hours.... is available to download. Bowie is the internet tour guide for the conversational Sensation at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Surfers can view all of the exhibit's 141 pieces, several with Bowie's audio comment- ary. *2000- Tentative release of Liveandwell.com, the Net's first "virtual CD." Fans now can hear live Earthling Tour tracks on BowieNet and submit linier notes, photos and design ideas.
